Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya recently convened a high-level meeting at Lok Bhavan to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at accelerating the state’s overall development and significantly enhancing its higher education landscape. For research scholars, the ‘Jibon Anuprerana’ scheme offers financial support, with eligible PhD scholars receiving Rs 25,000 per month, and differently-abled researchers receiving Rs 40,000 per month. The government has also been investing heavily in infrastructure, with plans to convert 4,000 high and higher secondary schools into modern ‘dream hubs’ by 2035, each receiving Rs 8 crore for renovation and upgrades. Additionally, 200 new school buildings are being constructed annually, and 100 new schools have been approved for establishment across the state. The Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East (PM-DeVINE) scheme has also been instrumental in upgrading government schools with smart classrooms and modern infrastructure.

Previous initiatives also include the “Assam Abhinandan Education Loan Subsidy Scheme,” launched in December 2019, which provides a loan subsidy of up to Rs 50,000 on education loans for permanent residents of Assam pursuing higher education. The state also became the first in the country to offer completely free higher education to students whose parents earn less than Rs 1 lakh per annum, covering admission and tuition fees in government colleges, higher secondary schools, and diploma polytechnic institutions.
