Guwahati: The Assam government has unveiled a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) roadmap aimed at fostering inclusive growth and enhancing the state’s competitiveness, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasising its potential to generate new employment opportunities across technology, research, and innovation sectors. The initiative also seeks to significantly improve productivity in traditional industries, according to official statements.

This strategic move is designed to position Assam as a frontrunner in the responsible adoption of AI, integrating the advanced technology into governance and various developmental sectors. The roadmap is expected to drive economic expansion and empower the workforce, addressing both the opportunities and inherent risks associated with AI.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly announced the state’s AI roadmap on Thursday, July 2, 2026, sharing details through a video on a social media platform. The Chief Minister stated that Assam is establishing the foundation for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence to accelerate inclusive growth, enhance governance, and boost its global competitiveness.

The announcement follows earlier directives from the Chief Minister in March 2026, which led to a review of the state’s AI roadmap by a Steering Committee on AI Adoption and Implementation. Chief Secretary Ravi Kota confirmed in May 2026 that government departments were tasked with identifying potential AI applications for public service delivery, governance, and administrative efficiency.

An “AI inventory exercise” conducted across various departments has already identified 343 project ideas spanning more than 50 departments, categorised into 11 thematic clusters, according to Chief Secretary Kota.

The state has been actively preparing its workforce for Industry 4.0 technologies. Multiple skill development initiatives were launched in September 2023 under the Assam Skill Development Mission, focusing on making youth employable and bridging skill gaps. These include setting up 60 training centres across Assam to train 5,750 youth in 59 vocations.
