The Department of Electrical Engineering at Assam Skill University (ASU) organised an Internship Project Exhibition and Expert Session on Solar Energy on July 31, 2026, in Mangaldai, Assam, to promote skill development in the burgeoning clean energy sector.

The event highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering industry-ready professionals and equipping students with practical skills crucial for India’s transition to renewable energy. It brought together students, faculty, and industry experts to showcase innovative projects and discuss career opportunities in the solar energy domain.

What was announced

The Internship Project Exhibition showcased innovative projects developed by students during their internships in the areas of Electric Vehicles (EV) and Solar Energy. A total of 34 students from various colleges and universities successfully completed the internship programme and presented their work.

Sri Nilutpal Dutta, Director, ADREE Energy, evaluated the projects and delivered an expert lecture titled “Career Opportunities in Solar Energy and its Future Prospects.” The session provided valuable insights into emerging trends, career pathways, technological advancements, and growing opportunities within the renewable energy sector, according to a university release.

Sri Subhas Chandra Das, IAS (Retd.), Vice Chancellor, Assam Skill University, congratulated the Department of Electrical Engineering for the successful conduct of the internship programme and the exhibition. Sri Hanif Noorani, ACS, Registrar, Assam Skill University, also appreciated the students’ dedication and enthusiasm.

Why it matters

The initiative by Assam Skill University holds significant importance for addressing the skill gap in India’s rapidly expanding clean energy market. Mr. Dutta emphasised the rapidly expanding opportunities in the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors, urging students to develop industry-relevant skills.

India’s solar sector is poised for substantial growth, with projections indicating the potential to create over one million jobs by 2030. The event directly contributes to building a skilled workforce essential for achieving the nation’s ambitious renewable energy targets and ensuring energy security.

Assam itself has set a target to achieve 11.7 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, including three GW of solar power. This policy framework underscores the critical need for a locally trained workforce to implement and operate upcoming projects.

Background

Assam Skill University was established under The Assam Skill University Act, 2020, with significant funding from the Asian Development Bank. It is recognised as the first skill university in North East India, aiming to empower youth with industry-aligned education, entrepreneurship, and innovation for socioeconomic growth.

The university commenced its academic sessions for 2024-25 from its city campus in Guwahati, with the main campus in Mangaldai becoming operational from the 2025-2026 academic session. The Department of Electrical Engineering at ASU offers industry-oriented programmes in Electric Vehicles and Renewable Energy, integrating theoretical concepts with practical skill development.

The state government has demonstrated a strong commitment to renewable energy, approving the Assam Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2025, in March 2025. This policy aims to position Assam as a leading investment destination in the renewable energy sector, promoting solar, wind, hydro, and green hydrogen initiatives. This policy superseded the previous Assam Renewable Energy Policy 2022.

Key details

The internship programme, which culminated in the exhibition, saw participation from students of several institutions, including Sipajhar College, Mangaldai College, Darrang College, Bineswar Brahma Engineering College (Kokrajhar), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (Sivasagar Campus), North Lakhimpur University, and Bhattadev University, Bajali.

The projects presented covered both Electric Vehicles and Solar Energy, demonstrating the practical application of skills acquired during the internship. The expert session by Mr. Nilutpal Dutta focused on the career landscape within the solar sector, including technological advancements and future prospects.

Reactions

“The rapidly expanding opportunities in the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors encourage students to develop industry-relevant skills and embrace innovation to contribute to India’s clean energy transition,” Sri Nilutpal Dutta, Director, ADREE Energy, said.

“The Department of Electrical Engineering’s efforts in providing hands-on learning opportunities are commendable, and the University remains committed to nurturing scientific temperament, innovation, and industry-ready professionals,” Sri Subhas Chandra Das, IAS (Retd.), Vice Chancellor, Assam Skill University, said.

“The successful completion of these internships and the dedication and enthusiasm shown by the students throughout the programme are highly appreciated,” Sri Hanif Noorani, ACS, Registrar, Assam Skill University, said.

What’s next

Assam Skill University aims to become a leading skill education institute, not only in India but across South East Asian countries, by continuously offering quality skill training. The university is expected to continue its focus on industry-aligned programmes, particularly in emerging sectors like renewable energy and electric vehicles, to meet future workforce demands.

The state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2025, outlines a roadmap for renewable energy capacity addition until 2029-30, which will necessitate ongoing skill development initiatives to support project implementation and operation. The government has also committed to introducing skill development programmes to build a trained workforce for the renewable sector.
